My name is Leah Hazard. Born and raised in the United States, I moved to Scotland in 1999 after completing my bachelor's degree at Harvard University. My first daughter's birth in 2003 prompted a major re-evaluation of my priorities, and I decided to leave a career in the media to pursue my long-standing interest in women's health and well being. Becoming a doula felt like the perfect way for me to try and provide other women with a positive experience of birth and early motherhood. Since completing my training in 2004, I have attended twenty births, as well as giving birth to my second daughter at home.
I am a regional representative and assessor/mentor for Doula UK and a mentor for the Scottish Doula Network. I am also the Home Birth Contact for the Glasgow North chapter of the National Childbirth Trust. As part of my continuing effort to improve and expand my services, I have completed a 10-week course in Aromatherapy at the University of Strathclyde, as well as an intensive workshop run by the Breastfeeding Initiative at the Queen Mother's Hospital in Yorkhill. I am currently writing a book about fathers and birth, which will be available in late 2008.
Some of the areas in which I have experience are: pre-conception preparation, VBAC, water birth, twins, pregnancy after miscarriage, pregnancy after fertility treatments, pregnancy with Group B Strep, homeopathy in labour, and HypnoBirthing. I have attended numerous home births across West/Central Scotland as well as births at the following hospitals: Queen Mother's, Southern General, Princess Royal, Stirling Royal, Edinburgh Simpson's, and Ayrshire Maternity Unit. Previous clients have come in all shapes, sizes, colours, and creeds -- some with partners, some without.
I live in the West End of Glasgow and am willing to travel up to an hour away from home to attend births and offer support. Please feel free contact me at any time, either by phone (0141) 959 5098 or by e-mailing leah_hazard@hotmail.com.
